AROMAS, Monterey County — October 29, 2026. A familiar landmark along Highway 101 has been the subject of a county historic-preservation review. Monterey County’s Historic Resources Review Board examined a request to replace deteriorated aluminum siding on the Historic Red Barn at 1000 North Highway 101 in Aromas. At its June 4, 2026 meeting, the board continued the matter to August 6 while requesting additional documentation; that is a procedural step, not a rejection or a final building permit.

Why is the Red Barn significant?

County preservation documents describe a barn built in 1945 with Kaiser aluminum siding and a steel three-hinged arch structural system. Skylights and sliding doors were added in later decades. The barn was identified as a contributing resource in the county’s historic resources inventory in 2010. Preservation review concerns how proposed repairs may affect these documented features.

What repairs did the applicant request?

Under file 26CP00819, the applicant sought a construction permit to replace damaged siding, aiming to match existing historic materials and appearance. County staff initially recommended a Class 31 historic-restoration exemption under CEQA and recommended approval with conditions.

What did the board ask for?

Meeting minutes show the board sought clarification on the treatment approach, the number of siding panels to replace, the condition of existing siding, possible hazards and the historical basis for the requested approach. The matter was continued so the applicant could provide more information. The June record does not establish that repairs were completed or that an August decision was made.

Why this is a local story

The Red Barn sits in the North County Inland Area Plan near the Ballantrae Estates neighborhood. Its visible historic architecture and roadside setting are distinctive parts of the Aromas area. Residents interested in the outcome should request the later Historic Resources Review Board minutes and the issued construction permit rather than assume the work has started.
