AROMAS, Monterey County — October 29, 2026. CAL FIRE has documented a 259-acre shaded fuel-break project around Aromas, designed to reduce hazardous vegetation and help firefighters contain future wildfires. The official Notice of Exemption was filed on May 21, 2026 as SCH 2026050859.
How will the vegetation be treated?
The planned work includes removing dense understory plants and ladder fuels in oak woodland, to reduce the chances of fire climbing into tree canopies. In eucalyptus-dominated areas, the agency proposes manual or mechanical removal of selected trees, followed by targeted stump and regrowth treatments directed by licensed professionals. The stated aim is to reduce intense fire behavior and support the recovery of native species.
Where would the fuel break go?
CAL FIRE identifies locations in sections 16, 17, 20, 21 and 29 of Township 12 South, Range 3 East near Aromas. The notice does not establish a street-by-street treatment schedule or permission for unrelated private vegetation clearing.
Will the project eliminate fire danger?
No fuel break can make a community fireproof. Treated areas may improve access and provide strategic control lines, but drought, high winds and embers can still create dangerous conditions. Residents need defensible space, home-hardening measures and a reliable evacuation plan.
Has it been finished?
The May filing explains environmental clearance under the state’s wildfire emergency framework; it does not establish how many acres have been treated as of October 29. Residents should seek updates from CAL FIRE before assuming crews have completed work at a specific location.
